Factors & multiples

What you’ll practice

Identify the greatest common positive factor of two positive integers.

List the factors of each number and look for the ones they share. The largest shared factor is the greatest common factor, also called GCF or HCF.

How this skill works

A common factor divides both numbers exactly. List the factor sets or use a repeated-division method to find their shared factors.

Choose the greatest shared factor, not the greatest number in either individual list. Some pairs share only 1.

Worked example

Find the greatest common factor of 18 and 24.
  1. Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18.
  2. Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.
  3. Their common factors are 1, 2, 3 and 6, so the greatest is 6.

Answer: 6

Teaching notes

  • Check that your answer divides both numbers.
  • A greatest common factor cannot exceed the smaller starting number.
