Arithmetic

What you’ll practice

Write the distinct addition and subtraction facts for two parts and their total.

If 7 + 5 = 12, what other facts do you know? Swap the addends or subtract either part from the total to see how the four equations connect.

How this skill works

If a + b = c, reversing the addends gives b + a = c. Subtracting either part from the total gives the other part.

When both parts are equal, some written equations coincide. Record each distinct fact once rather than inventing a different result.

Worked example

Write the fact family for 7, 5 and 12.
  1. The parts 7 and 5 combine to make 12.
  2. Addition allows the parts in either order.
  3. Removing one part from 12 leaves the other part.

Answer: 7 + 5 = 12; 5 + 7 = 12; 12 − 7 = 5; 12 − 5 = 7

Teaching notes

  • Use the largest value as the whole.
  • Check that subtraction starts with the total.
