Arithmetic

What you’ll practice

Use subtraction as the inverse of addition to find a missing addend.

You know the total and one of its parts. Subtract that part to find the missing addend, then put your answer back into the addition to check it.

How this skill works

The total consists of the known addend plus the missing addend. Subtract the known amount from the total to isolate the missing amount.

After filling the box, read the complete addition again. It must give exactly the total stated in the question.

Worked example

Find the missing addend: 28 + □ = 63.
  1. Subtract the known part: 63 − 28 = 35.
  2. Check: 28 + 35 = 63.

Answer: 35

Teaching notes

  • Treat the box as a number, not as an operation.
  • A zero answer is possible if the known addend already equals the total.
