Algebra

What you’ll practice

Solve a one-step equation using the inverse operation.

Keep the equation balanced by doing the same thing to both sides. Use the inverse operation to leave x on its own, then substitute your answer to check it.

How this skill works

Undo addition with subtraction and subtraction with addition.

Undo multiplication with division by a nonzero number, or undo division by multiplying. Substitute the result into the original equation to check it.

Worked example

Solve 4x = −12.
  1. Divide both sides by 4.
  2. x = −12 ÷ 4 = −3.
  3. Check: 4 × (−3) = −12.

Answer: x = −3

Teaching notes

  • Perform the inverse operation on both sides.
Practice questions

Answers and steps
  1. x = −10
    1. Multiply both sides by 2: x = −10.
    2. Substituting x = −10 gives −5 = −5.
  2. x = 9
    1. Multiply both sides by 3: x = 9.
    2. Substituting x = 9 gives 3 = 3.
  3. x = −10
    1. Multiply both sides by 12: x = −10.
    2. Substituting x = −10 gives −5/6 = −5/6.
  4. x = 11
    1. Divide both sides by 5: x = 11.
    2. Substituting x = 11 gives 55 = 55.
  5. x = −1
    1. Add 9 to both sides: x = −1.
    2. Substituting x = −1 gives −10 = −10.
  6. x = −7
    1. Subtract 8 from both sides: x = −7.
    2. Substituting x = −7 gives 1 = 1.
  7. x = −5
    1. Subtract 11 from both sides: x = −5.
    2. Substituting x = −5 gives 6 = 6.
  8. x = 7
    1. Multiply both sides by 12: x = 7.
    2. Substituting x = 7 gives 7/12 = 7/12.
  9. x = −8
    1. Divide both sides by 10: x = −8.
    2. Substituting x = −8 gives −80 = −80.
  10. x = −11
    1. Add 9 to both sides: x = −11.
    2. Substituting x = −11 gives −20 = −20.
  11. x = 8
    1. Multiply both sides by 4: x = 8.
    2. Substituting x = 8 gives 2 = 2.
  12. x = −1
    1. Multiply both sides by 7: x = −1.
    2. Substituting x = −1 gives −1/7 = −1/7.
