Factors & multiples

What you’ll practice

Generate an initial sequence of positive multiples by multiplying a base number by 1 through 5.

Start with the number itself and add that amount again each time. You can check the list by multiplying the starting number by 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

How this skill works

Multiples of a number result from multiplying it by whole numbers. This sheet starts at one times the number, so zero is not included in the requested list.

Consecutive listed multiples differ by the base number. That constant difference provides a quick check on the sequence.

Worked example

Write the first five positive multiples of 7.
  1. 7 × 1 = 7 and 7 × 2 = 14.
  2. Continue with 7 × 3, 7 × 4 and 7 × 5.
  3. The list is 7, 14, 21, 28, 35.

Answer: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35

Teaching notes

  • Add the same base number to move from one multiple to the next.
  • Do not stop at factors of the base number.
