Factors & multiples

What you’ll practice

Use a number’s positive factors to decide whether it is prime, composite or neither.

Count the positive factors. A prime has exactly two, a composite has more than two, and 1 has just one—so it belongs in neither group.

How this skill works

A prime number has exactly two distinct positive factors: 1 and itself. A composite number has an additional positive factor between them.

The number 1 has only one positive factor, so it is neither. The number 2 is prime even though it is even.

Worked example

Classify 21.
  1. 21 = 3 × 7.
  2. Because 3 and 7 are factors beyond 1 and 21, the number is composite.

Answer: composite

Teaching notes

  • Try small divisors before deciding that a number is prime.
  • Remember that odd does not mean prime.

Answers and steps
  1. composite
    1. 6 = 2 × 3, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  2. composite
    1. 68 = 2 × 34, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  3. composite
    1. 46 = 2 × 23, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  4. composite
    1. 95 = 5 × 19, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  5. composite
    1. 8 = 2 × 4, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  6. composite
    1. 50 = 2 × 25, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  7. prime
    1. The only positive factors of 13 are 1 and 13, so it is prime.
  8. composite
    1. 92 = 2 × 46, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  9. prime
    1. The only positive factors of 41 are 1 and 41, so it is prime.
  10. composite
    1. 48 = 2 × 24, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
  11. prime
    1. The only positive factors of 67 are 1 and 67, so it is prime.
  12. composite
    1. 96 = 2 × 48, with both factors greater than 1, so it is composite.
