Geometry

What you’ll practice

Measure an angle with a protractor using the correct scale.

Put the center of your protractor on the vertex and line up zero with the horizontal ray. Follow the scale from that zero to the other ray.

How this skill works

Keep the center mark at the exact vertex.

Read from zero along the horizontal ray to the other ray. Check whether the result should be acute or obtuse before choosing between two protractor scales.

Worked example

A ray aligns with the 65° tick when the other ray is at 0°.
  1. Read the scale that starts at the aligned zero.
  2. The sloping ray is at 65° on that scale.
  3. The angle is acute, which agrees with 65°.

Answer: 65°

Teaching notes

  • Print at a uniform scale; stretching a diagram differently in each direction changes its angle.
