Read the labels before choosing a formula. Most diagrams give the measurements you need. For protractor practice, choose Measuring angles: those diagrams leave the degree measure for you to find.

Where to start

  1. Lines, rays and segments

Begin with endpoints and arrowheads. Explain which objects stop and which extend, rather than classifying them by apparent length.

  2. Classifying angles

Connect a stated measure to an angle type. Use measuring angles when positioning and reading a protractor is the practice goal.

  3. Rectangle area and perimeter

Separate distance around a shape from the space inside it. Keep the unit in every answer before moving to triangle or quadrilateral area.

Check understanding

A rectangle is 8 cm long and 3 cm wide. Find its area and perimeter.

Area: 24 cm². Perimeter: 22 cm.

Area is 8 × 3 square centimetres. Perimeter is 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 centimetres. Different units help distinguish the two measurements.

Teaching notes

For triangle and quadrilateral area, use the perpendicular height rather than a sloping side. Circle answers stay exact in terms of π. Prism diagrams label dimensions and are not for measurement. When using a protractor on printed angles, keep the paper at the intended scale and inspect the output first.
