Measurement & data

What you’ll practice

Read an analog clock in five-minute increments.

Read the long hand for minutes, then the short hand for hours. When the short hand is between two numbers, use the hour it has already passed.

How this skill works

Each numbered minute position is five minutes after 12.

Read the hour from the short hand. When it is between two numbers, use the hour it has already passed.

Worked example

The long hand points at 6; the short hand is halfway between 9 and 10.
  1. The long hand at 6 means 6 × 5 = 30 minutes.
  2. The short hand has passed 9 but not 10.
  3. The time is 9:30.

Answer: 9:30

Teaching notes

  • A short hand near the next hour does not mean that hour has started.
