Check the unit, scale or key before calculating. A clock, bar graph and pictograph each show values differently. Practice reading one value first, then try combining or summarizing them.

Where to start

  1. Reading analog clocks

Read the minute hand in five-minute steps and use the hour hand position to identify the hour. A clock face alone does not tell AM or PM.

  2. Reading bar graphs

Read one category from the labeled scale before comparing or combining counts. Contrast this with pictographs, where the key gives a value per symbol.

  3. Mean, median, mode and range

Sort the five values before finding the median. Keep mean, mode and range as separate calculations and explain what each describes.

Check understanding

A pictograph key says one symbol represents 5 items. A row shows 4 whole symbols. How many items are there?

20 items.

Multiply 4 symbols by 5 items per symbol. Reporting 4 would count the marks rather than the items they represent.

Teaching notes

Elapsed-time sheets use 24-hour times and label a finish on the next day. Metric conversion covers the listed length, mass and capacity pairs. Probability questions describe one draw from known color counts. For graph sheets, inspect the labels and key in the complete preview before printing.
