Measurement & data

What you’ll practice

Complete frequencies for all values in a stated integer range.

Work through the data one value at a time and record each occurrence. Add your frequencies at the end: their total should match the length of the list.

How this skill works

Make one column for each possible value, including values that do not appear.

Count each observation in its matching column. Add the frequencies to check that they equal the number of observations.

Worked example

Data: 1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2. Find the frequencies of 1, 2, and 3.
  1. 1 appears twice, 2 appears three times, and 3 appears once.
  2. 2 + 3 + 1 = 6, matching the six observations.

Answer: 1: 2; 2: 3; 3: 1

Teaching notes

  • Write zero for a possible value that is absent.
