Measurement & data

What you’ll practice

Read one category count or add two counts from a bar graph.

Check the vertical scale, then find the bar named in the question. If you need a combined total, read each bar separately before adding.

How this skill works

Match the named category to its bar. Trace its top to the value scale.

For a combined count, read both bars separately and add the values. Do not add the category labels or tick positions.

Worked example

A graph shows 6 apples and 9 pears. How many apples and pears are shown altogether?
  1. Read the apple bar: 6. Read the pear bar: 9.
  2. 6 + 9 = 15 items.

Answer: 15 items

Teaching notes

  • The printed numbers above the bars provide an exact count when a top lies between ticks.
