Number sense

What you’ll practice

Compare two whole numbers using place value and the correct symbol.

Which number is greater? Compare the digits from left to right, starting with the largest place value. Remember to check for equal pairs too.

How this skill works

A number with more digits is larger when neither number has unnecessary leading zeros. With the same digit count, compare from the left until a position differs.

The open side of < or > faces the larger number. Use = when the complete values match.

Worked example

Fill the box: 4,208 □ 4,280.
  1. The thousands and hundreds digits match.
  2. Compare the tens digits: 0 is less than 8.
  3. Therefore 4208 < 4280.

Answer: <

Teaching notes

  • Stop at the first differing position.
  • Read the completed comparison aloud from left to right.
