What you’ll practice
Find the value of a digit in a named place in a whole number.
The same digit can mean 4, 40 or 400, depending on where it sits. Read the named place, then write the value of the digit in that position.
How this skill works
Each position to the left is worth ten times the position to its right. A 4 in the hundreds place therefore contributes 400, while a 4 in the ones place contributes 4.
Read the named position before multiplying the digit by its place value. A zero contributes zero even when it holds an important position.
Worked example
What is the value of the digit 7 in the hundreds place of 4,732?
- The hundreds place is the third position from the right.
- Its digit is 7, so its value is 7 × 100 = 700.
Answer: 700
Teaching notes
- Say the place name before calculating the value.
- Keep zero positions when writing the original number.
