Start with place value, then use it to compare, order and round numbers. If you are choosing practice for someone else, ask them to explain one example first; that often makes the next worksheet easier to choose.

Where to start

  1. Place value

Use this when a learner can read a number but confuses a digit with its value. Ask what the 4 contributes in 4,206 before moving to larger numbers.

  2. Comparing numbers

Compare pairs before ordering a whole set. Have the learner point to the first place where the digits differ, then read the comparison aloud.

  3. Rounding whole numbers

Move to estimates once place values are clear. Locate the two neighboring multiples and explain which is closer.

Check understanding

Which is greater, 3,405 or 3,450? Explain without rounding.

3,450 is greater.

The thousands and hundreds match. The tens digits differ: 5 tens is more than 0 tens. Rounding both numbers too early can hide that difference.

Teaching notes

If a learner orders 74 after 407 because 7 is greater than 4, return to place value and compare the number of digits first. Number lines offer another way to show relative size. Roman numerals are a separate notation task rather than a required next step.
