What you’ll practice
Complete a ratio without changing the comparison it represents.
Find the multiplier connecting the first terms, then apply it to the second term. Multiplying both parts by the same amount keeps the ratio equivalent.
How this skill works
Compare the first term in each ratio to find the scale factor.
Multiply the second term by that same factor. A ratio is not kept equivalent by adding the same number to both terms.
Worked example
Complete 3:5 = 12:__.
- 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
- Multiply the second term by 4: 5 × 4 = 20.
- 3:5 = 12:20.
Answer: 20
Teaching notes
- Check both corresponding terms use the same multiplier.
