First identify the quantities in the question. Are you comparing two amounts, finding a part of a whole, or working out how much something changed? Choose the worksheet for that particular task.

Where to start

  1. Equivalent ratios

Practice scaling both ratio terms by the same factor. Ask what stays constant when both quantities change.

  2. Fractions, decimals and percentages

Connect equivalent representations using exact hundredths. Explain a familiar value such as 25% = 0.25 = 1/4 before extending the range.

  3. Percent of a quantity

Find a part of a known whole. Once this direction is secure, use finding-the-whole questions to reverse the relationship.

Check understanding

A quantity increases from 80 to 100. What is the percentage increase?

25% increase.

The increase is 20 and the original quantity is 80. Calculate 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Using the new amount as the base would answer a different comparison.

Teaching notes

On finding-the-whole worksheets, the range controls the hidden whole rather than the displayed part. On percentage-change worksheets, it controls the original amount. The unit-rate sheet uses whole-dollar costs per item; it is a focused division task for finding a price per item.
