What you’ll practice
Distinguish percentage increase from decrease and divide by the original value.
Find how much the amount changed, then compare that change with the original amount. Use the starting value as the base whether the change is an increase or a decrease.
How this skill works
Subtract original from new to find the signed change.
Divide the change by the original amount and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease.
Worked example
A quantity changes from 80 to 100. Find the percentage change.
- 100 − 80 = 20.
- 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
- The new amount is larger, so this is a 25% increase.
Answer: 25% increase
Teaching notes
- Always use the original quantity in the denominator.
