Algebra

What you’ll practice

Evaluate ax + b for a given integer value of x.

The value of x is supplied, so you do not need to solve for it. Substitute that number into the expression, then multiply before adding.

How this skill works

Replace every occurrence of x with its stated value.

Multiply before adding the constant. A negative substitution should remain in parentheses until the product is calculated.

Worked example

Evaluate 3x + 5 when x = −2.
  1. 3(−2) + 5
  2. −6 + 5
  3. −1

Answer: −1

Teaching notes

  • The value of x is given; this task does not ask you to solve an equation.
