Simplify expressions, solve equations and follow patterns.

Check what the question asks you to find. Evaluating an expression gives a number; simplifying changes its form; solving an equation finds a value that makes it true. Start with one of these tasks at a time.

Where to start

  1. Evaluating expressions

    Substitute a known integer for x and follow the order of operations. This also prepares a way to check equation solutions.

  2. Combining like terms

    Collect coefficients of x separately from constants. Use the distributive-property sheet when brackets need expanding first.

  3. One-step equations

    Use an inverse operation on both sides, then substitute the result. Progress to two-step equations when that check is familiar.

Check understanding

Solve 3x + 4 = 19, then check the value.

x = 5.

Subtract 4 from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide both sides by 3. Substitution gives 3 × 5 + 4 = 19, so the value satisfies the original equation.

Teaching notes

One- and two-step equation ranges select the solution rather than every visible coefficient. Inequalities require a separate check: dividing both sides by a negative reverses the comparison sign. Number sequences here use a constant difference; they do not include geometric sequences.
