What you’ll practice
Compute sums and differences of signed integers.
Use the signs to decide which way to move on a number line. Subtracting a negative number has the same effect as adding its positive opposite.
How this skill works
For addition, combine movement in the directions indicated by the signs.
Rewrite a − b as a + (−b). Then use the same addition rules.
Worked example
Evaluate −7 − (−4).
- Subtracting −4 is the same as adding 4.
- −7 − (−4) = −7 + 4.
- Starting at −7 and moving four places right reaches −3.
Answer: −3
Teaching notes
- Parentheses make a negative second term easier to read.
