Arithmetic

What you’ll practice

Calculate a multi-digit product by multiplying each place-value contribution and adding the partial products.

Break the second factor into ones, tens and hundreds. Multiply each part separately, line up the partial products and add them to find the full product.

How this skill works

Break the second factor into its place-value terms. In 23, the 2 contributes 20, so that partial product must be a multiplication by 20 rather than by 2.

Add the partial products after aligning their place values. The distributive property makes their sum equal to the original product.

Worked example

Calculate 34 × 23.
  1. 34 × 3 = 102.
  2. 34 × 20 = 680.
  3. 102 + 680 = 782.

Answer: 782

Teaching notes

  • Label the value represented by each multiplier digit.
  • Estimate the product before calculating to catch place-value slips.

Answers and steps
  1. 2418
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 26 × 3 = 78.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 26 × 90 = 2340.
    3. Add the partial products: 78 + 2340 = 2418.
  2. 6853
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 89 × 7 = 623.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 89 × 70 = 6230.
    3. Add the partial products: 623 + 6230 = 6853.
  3. 1248
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 48 × 6 = 288.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 48 × 20 = 960.
    3. Add the partial products: 288 + 960 = 1248.
  4. 2752
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 86 × 2 = 172.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 86 × 30 = 2580.
    3. Add the partial products: 172 + 2580 = 2752.
  5. 6208
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 97 × 4 = 388.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 97 × 60 = 5820.
    3. Add the partial products: 388 + 5820 = 6208.
  6. 7821
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 79 × 9 = 711.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 79 × 90 = 7110.
    3. Add the partial products: 711 + 7110 = 7821.
  7. 5616
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 72 × 8 = 576.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 72 × 70 = 5040.
    3. Add the partial products: 576 + 5040 = 5616.
  8. 700
    1. Multiply by the ones contribution: 14 × 0 = 0.
    2. Multiply by the tens contribution: 14 × 50 = 700.
    3. Add the partial products: 0 + 700 = 700.
