Number sense

What you’ll practice

Write a whole number as a sum of place values and convert that sum back to standard form.

Writing 3,406 as 3,000 + 400 + 6 shows what each digit contributes. Practice both directions: break a number into parts and turn a place-value sum back into a number.

How this skill works

Expanded form shows each nonzero digit multiplied by its place value. Zero-value terms may be omitted because adding zero changes nothing.

When rebuilding a number, align each term by its place. Do not concatenate the written terms: 300 + 40 + 2 means 342, not 300402.

Worked example

Write 3,406 in expanded form.
  1. The nonzero digits contribute 3 × 1000, 4 × 100 and 6 × 1.
  2. The tens digit is zero, so its term can be omitted.
  3. 3000 + 400 + 6 = 3406.

Answer: 3000 + 400 + 6

Teaching notes

  • Use one term for each nonzero position.
  • Check by adding the expanded terms back together.

Answers and steps
  1. 3000 + 400 + 10 + 4
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 3000 + 400 + 10 + 4.
    2. Add the place values: 3000 + 400 + 10 + 4 = 3414.
  2. 5103
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 5000 + 100 + 3.
    2. Add the place values: 5000 + 100 + 3 = 5103.
  3. 7000 + 200 + 30 + 7
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 7000 + 200 + 30 + 7.
    2. Add the place values: 7000 + 200 + 30 + 7 = 7237.
  4. 4943
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 4000 + 900 + 40 + 3.
    2. Add the place values: 4000 + 900 + 40 + 3 = 4943.
  5. 7000 + 300 + 50 + 7
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 7000 + 300 + 50 + 7.
    2. Add the place values: 7000 + 300 + 50 + 7 = 7357.
  6. 583
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 500 + 80 + 3.
    2. Add the place values: 500 + 80 + 3 = 583.
  7. 1000 + 500 + 50 + 5
    1. Separate the nonzero place values: 1000 + 500 + 50 + 5.
    2. Add the place values: 1000 + 500 + 50 + 5 = 1555.
  8. 6043
