Arithmetic

What you’ll practice

Find a whole-number quotient and remainder, then check them by multiplication and addition.

Divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit. Repeat until every digit has been used, then check that the remainder is smaller than the divisor.

How this skill works

At each stage, divide the current amount, record one quotient digit, multiply back and subtract. Bring down the next dividend digit to continue.

The final remainder must be smaller than the divisor. Check the result with divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend.

Worked example

Divide 157 ÷ 12.
  1. 12 goes into the leading 15 once, leaving 3.
  2. Bring down 7 to make 37; 12 goes into 37 three times, leaving 1.
  3. Check: 12 × 13 + 1 = 157.

Answer: 13 R 1

Teaching notes

  • Preserve a zero quotient digit when it occurs between nonzero digits.
  • Always compare the final remainder with the divisor.

Answers and steps
  1. 80 R 0
    1. Bring down 6 to make 6. 6 ÷ 8 gives 0; subtract 0 to leave 6.
    2. Bring down 4 to make 64. 64 ÷ 8 gives 8; subtract 64 to leave 0.
    3. Bring down 0 to make 0. 0 ÷ 8 gives 0; subtract 0 to leave 0.
    4. Check: 8 × 80 + 0 = 640; the remainder is smaller than 8.
  2. 9 R 6
    1. Bring down 1 to make 1. 1 ÷ 12 gives 0; subtract 0 to leave 1.
