What you’ll practice
Connect a shaded part-whole model with its numerator and denominator.
Count all the equal parts to find the denominator, then count the shaded parts to find the numerator. Use the parts shown, even if the fraction could be simplified.
How this skill works
The denominator counts every equal part in the whole. The numerator counts only the shaded parts. Equal size is essential: unequal pieces cannot be counted as equal fractional units.
A bar with 3 shaded parts out of 6 represents 3/6. That is equal to 1/2, but this task asks for the fraction using the shown partition.
Worked example
- Count all 8 equal parts for the denominator.
- Count 3 shaded parts for the numerator.
- The model represents 3/8.
Answer: 3/8
Teaching notes
- Count unshaded parts too when finding the denominator.
- Use equivalent fractions later to describe the same amount in another partition.
