What you’ll practice
Interpret a proper fraction as a location on a unit number line.
The spaces between 0 and 1 divide one whole into equal parts. Count how many spaces take you from zero to the marked point, then write that fraction.
How this skill works
A unit line from 0 to 1 represents one whole. If it has d equal intervals, each interval represents 1/d.
Count how many intervals lie between zero and the point. That count is the numerator; the total interval count is the denominator.
Worked example
- Each interval is 1/6.
- Two intervals from zero represent 2/6.
- 2/6 simplifies to 1/3; both describe the same point.
Answer: 1/3
Teaching notes
- Count intervals from zero, not labels.
- Equivalent fractions land on the same location.
Practice questions

Answers and steps
- 1/6
- The whole is divided into 6 equal intervals. The point is 1 intervals from zero, so its value is 1/6 = 1/6.
- 2/3
- The whole is divided into 6 equal intervals. The point is 4 intervals from zero, so its value is 4/6 = 2/3.
- 1/2
- The whole is divided into 2 equal intervals. The point is 1 intervals from zero, so its value is 1/2 = 1/2.
- 1/4
- The whole is divided into 8 equal intervals. The point is 2 intervals from zero, so its value is 2/8 = 1/4.
- 1/3
- The whole is divided into 6 equal intervals. The point is 2 intervals from zero, so its value is 2/6 = 1/3.
- 2/5
- The whole is divided into 5 equal intervals. The point is 2 intervals from zero, so its value is 2/5 = 2/5.
- 1/3
- The whole is divided into 3 equal intervals. The point is 1 intervals from zero, so its value is 1/3 = 1/3.
- 5/6
- The whole is divided into 6 equal intervals. The point is 5 intervals from zero, so its value is 5/6 = 5/6.
