What you’ll practice
Evaluate the absolute value of a signed integer.
The absolute value of −8 is 8 because −8 is eight steps from zero. The bars ask for distance, so the answer is never negative.
How this skill works
For a positive number, the absolute value is that number.
For a negative number, remove the negative sign to give its distance from zero. The absolute value of zero is zero.
Worked example
Find |−8|.
- −8 is eight unit steps from 0.
- Its distance from 0 is 8, so |−8| = 8.
Answer: 8
Teaching notes
- Absolute-value bars are not parentheses for multiplication.
