Integers

What you’ll practice

Read an unlabeled integer position across zero.

Values increase as you move right along the number line. Use the labeled ticks and one-unit steps to find point A, including positions on either side of zero.

How this skill works

Each adjacent tick in these diagrams differs by 1.

Moving right adds 1; moving left subtracts 1. Passing through zero does not change the spacing.

Worked example

A line has ticks −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2. Point A is one tick left of 0.
  1. One step left means subtract 1.
  2. 0 − 1 = −1.

Answer: −1

Teaching notes

  • Keep negative signs attached to their numbers.
