Integers worksheets

Compare and calculate with positive and negative numbers.

Free to use · No sign-up

Use a number line to connect negative numbers with position and direction. Then practice comparison, absolute value and operations, checking what the signs mean in each task.

Where to start

  1. Integers on number lines

Read positions on both sides of zero. Trace movement to the right as increasing value, including when both numbers are negative.

  2. Absolute value

Interpret the bars as distance from zero. Compare the distance with the signed position so the two ideas do not become interchangeable.

  3. Adding and subtracting integers

Work with signed terms and explain what subtracting a negative means. Check the resulting direction before relying on a memorized phrase.

Check understanding

Compare −8 and −3, then compare their absolute values.

−8 < −3, but |−8| = 8 > 3 = |−3|.

−8 lies farther left on the number line, so it is smaller. Its distance from zero is greater. Position and distance give different comparisons.

Teaching notes

Multiplication and division use nonzero factors and division without remainders. Powers need an additional reading check: (−3)² is 9, while −3² is −9 because the minus sign is outside the power. Use the dedicated exponent sheet to practice that distinction.
