What you’ll practice
Determine the size of an equal interval and use it to identify a missing whole number.
Count the spaces between the labeled ends to work out the size of each step. Then use those equal steps to find the missing number.
How this skill works
Count intervals rather than tick marks: a line with five ticks has four intervals. Divide the difference between endpoint values by the number of intervals.
Start at a labeled endpoint and move the correct number of intervals to the marked position. Equal visual distances represent equal numerical changes.
Worked example
- The full difference is 30 − 10 = 20.
- Each interval represents 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
- Two intervals after 10 gives 10 + 2 × 5 = 20.
Answer: 20
Teaching notes
- Count spaces between ticks, not the ticks themselves.
- Use the other endpoint to check the interval size.
Practice questions
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.
A number line from 18 to 26, split into 4 equal intervals. Tick 3, counting from zero at the left endpoint, is marked with a question mark.
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.
A number line from 8 to 15, split into 7 equal intervals. Tick 2, counting from zero at the left endpoint, is marked with a question mark.
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.
A number line from 24 to 42, split into 2 equal intervals. Tick 1, counting from zero at the left endpoint, is marked with a question mark.
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.
A number line from 9 to 29, split into 2 equal intervals. Tick 1, counting from zero at the left endpoint, is marked with a question mark.
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.
A number line from 22 to 28, split into 2 equal intervals. Tick 1, counting from zero at the left endpoint, is marked with a question mark.
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.
A number line from 6 to 46, split into 4 equal intervals. Tick 2, counting from zero at the left endpoint, is marked with a question mark.
- Write the missing number at the marked tick.

- Each interval is (26 − 18) ÷ 4 = 2.
- Move 3 intervals from 18: 18 + 3 × 2 = 24.
- 10
- Each interval is (15 − 8) ÷ 7 = 1.
- Move 2 intervals from 8: 8 + 2 × 1 = 10.
- 33
- Each interval is (42 − 24) ÷ 2 = 9.
- Move 1 intervals from 24: 24 + 1 × 9 = 33.
- 19
- Each interval is (29 − 9) ÷ 2 = 10.
- Move 1 intervals from 9: 9 + 1 × 10 = 19.
- 25
- Each interval is (28 − 22) ÷ 2 = 3.
- Move 1 intervals from 22: 22 + 1 × 3 = 25.
- 26
- Each interval is (46 − 6) ÷ 4 = 10.
- Move 2 intervals from 6: 6 + 2 × 10 = 26.
- 32
- Each interval is (40 − 16) ÷ 3 = 8.
- Move 2 intervals from 16: 16 + 2 × 8 = 32.
