What you’ll practice
Read and write Roman numerals from 1 to 3999 with standard subtractive pairs.
Learn how groups such as IV, XL and CM fit together. The questions go both ways, so you can practice reading Roman numerals as well as writing them.
How this skill works
Roman symbols are grouped from larger values to smaller values. Common symbols are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000.
The subtractive pairs IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM represent 4, 9, 40, 90, 400 and 900. Read each pair as one value group.
Worked example
Write 944 in Roman numerals.
- 944 = 900 + 40 + 4.
- The groups are CM, XL and IV.
- Combine them in descending value order: CMXLIV.
Answer: CMXLIV
Teaching notes
- Separate subtractive pairs before adding their values.
- Use IV for 4 and IX for 9 in this notation.
