Integers

What you’ll practice

Apply sign rules to integer products and exact quotients.

For two nonzero numbers, matching signs give a positive answer and different signs give a negative answer. Decide on the sign, then multiply or divide the numbers.

How this skill works

First determine the sign from the two inputs.

Multiply or divide their absolute values. Combine that magnitude with the sign.

Worked example

Evaluate (−24) ÷ 6.
  1. The signs differ, so the quotient is negative.
  2. 24 ÷ 6 = 4.
  3. The result is −4.

Answer: −4

Teaching notes

  • Division by zero is never permitted.
