What you’ll practice
Express a rectangular array as rows multiplied by the number of dots in each row.
Count the rows and the dots in each row. Their product gives the total, so you can connect a picture of equal groups with a multiplication equation.
How this skill works
Count the rows and then count the dots in one row. Multiplying these counts finds the total without counting every dot separately.
Turning the array swaps the row and column counts but does not change the total. Both corresponding multiplication equations describe the same number of dots.
Worked example
- There are 3 equal rows.
- Each row contains 4 dots, so 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
- The matching equation is 3 × 4 = 12.
Answer: 3 × 4 = 12
Teaching notes
- Count complete rows before counting individual dots.
- Use the turned array to explain why 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 have the same result.
