Decimals

What you’ll practice

Add and subtract decimals to two places, with no negative subtraction answers.

Keep tenths under tenths and hundredths under hundredths. Add or subtract as you would with whole numbers, keeping the decimal point in line.

How this skill works

Align decimal points so hundredths combine with hundredths and tenths combine with tenths. Treat both values as counts of hundredths during the calculation.

After adding or subtracting those integer counts, place the decimal point two digits from the right. Add a leading or trailing zero when needed to keep the notation clear.

Worked example

Calculate 0.10 + 0.20.
  1. 0.10 is 10 hundredths and 0.20 is 20 hundredths.
  2. 10 + 20 = 30 hundredths.
  3. 30 hundredths is 0.30 exactly.

Answer: 0.30

Teaching notes

  • Use a zero placeholder when a position would otherwise be empty.
  • Subtract the smaller value from the larger on these practice sheets.
