What you’ll practice

Add two whole numbers using column alignment and correct carrying where needed.

Line up the ones, tens and hundreds, then add from right to left. Choose whether the questions need regrouping, and use the on-page steps to check each carry.

How this skill works

Write ones under ones, tens under tens and hundreds under hundreds. Begin at the ones column so any carry reaches the next column before it is added.

A column total of ten or more is split into a written digit and a carry. For example, 15 means write 5 in the current column and carry 1 to the next.

Worked example

Calculate 157 + 268.
  1. Ones: 7 + 8 = 15; write 5 and carry 1.
  2. Tens: 5 + 6 + 1 = 12; write 2 and carry 1.
  3. Hundreds: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4. The total is 425.

Answer: 425
