Decimals

What you’ll practice

Round nonnegative two-place decimals with a stated target place and a consistent halfway rule.

Check which place the question asks for, then find the nearest value at that place. On these sheets, a number exactly halfway rounds up.

How this skill works

For the nearest tenth, inspect the hundredths digit or compare with the midpoint between neighboring tenths. For the nearest whole number, compare with the halfway point between neighboring integers.

This sheet rounds halfway values upward. A carry can change the whole-number part, as when 2.96 rounds to 3.0 to the nearest tenth.

Worked example

Round 2.65 to the nearest tenth.
  1. The neighboring tenths are 2.6 and 2.7.
  2. Their midpoint is 2.65.
  3. The value is halfway, so it rounds up to 2.7.

Answer: 2.7

Teaching notes

  • Keep one decimal place when the answer is requested to the nearest tenth.
  • Check whether rounding crosses a whole-number boundary.
