Tenths and hundredths are different-sized units. Start with place value and comparisons, then use that understanding to line up, round and calculate decimal values.

Where to start

  1. Decimal place value

Identify what a digit contributes. Connect 0.4 to four tenths and 0.04 to four hundredths before comparing their written lengths.

  2. Comparing and ordering decimals

Compare aligned places and use an extra zero when helpful. Move from pairs to ordered sets once the reason for each comparison is clear.

  3. Adding and subtracting decimals

Line up decimal points so equal units share a column. Check the size of the result before checking individual digits.

Check understanding

Which is greater, 0.8 or 0.75?

0.8 is greater because 0.80 > 0.75.

Eight tenths is eighty hundredths. Comparing 80 hundredths with 75 hundredths avoids treating the number of written digits as the value.

Teaching notes

Read the range help before editing it. Hundredths-based sheets use integer counts of hundredths: 125 means 1.25. Multiplication and division use their own tenth-based controls. The fractions-and-decimals sheet covers exact terminating decimals; it does not round recurring decimals.
