What you’ll practice
Identify a digit’s value in the ones, tenths or hundredths position.
In 4.73, the 7 means seven tenths and the 3 means three hundredths. Use the decimal point to find the named place before writing the digit’s value.
How this skill works
Moving one place to the right divides a place value by ten. Tenths are 1/10 and hundredths are 1/100 of a whole.
The digit alone does not give its value: a 7 in the tenths place is 0.7, while a 7 in the hundredths place is 0.07.
Worked example
What is the value of the digit 7 in the tenths place of 4.73?
- The tenths position represents groups of 1/10.
- 7 tenths = 7/10 = 0.70.
Answer: 0.70
Teaching notes
- Use the decimal point as the reference position.
- A trailing zero does not change a decimal value.
