What you’ll practice
Compare and order nonnegative decimals by expressing them in the same place-value units.
Line up the decimal points and compare matching places. Adding a trailing zero can help: 0.8 is the same as 0.80, so it is greater than 0.75.
How this skill works
Align decimal points and, if useful, add trailing zeros until all values have the same number of places. Then compare matching place values.
0.8 and 0.80 name the same amount. In contrast, 0.08 is eight hundredths and is smaller than eight tenths.
Worked example
Compare 0.8 and 0.75.
- Write 0.8 as 0.80.
- Compare 80 hundredths with 75 hundredths.
- 80 > 75, so 0.8 > 0.75.

Teaching notes
- Do not judge value by the number of decimal digits.
- Keep every item when ordering a set, including repeated values.
