Decimals

What you’ll practice

Calculate an exact decimal quotient and verify it by multiplication.

Move the decimal point by the same amount in both numbers to make the division easier. Every answer on this sheet ends exactly, so there is no rounding step.

How this skill works

Multiplying both dividend and divisor by the same power of ten leaves their quotient unchanged. This can turn decimal division into an integer fraction.

Check by reversing the operation. A correct quotient multiplied by the original divisor reproduces the original dividend exactly.

Worked example

Calculate 1.44 ÷ 1.2.
  1. Multiply both numbers by 100: 144 ÷ 120.
  2. 144/120 = 12/10 = 1.2.
  3. Check: 1.2 × 1.2 = 1.44.

Answer: 1.2

Teaching notes

  • Move the decimal point in both dividend and divisor by the same amount.
  • Do not introduce a rounding step when the exact quotient is available.
