Geometry

What you’ll practice

Calculate both area and perimeter from two rectangle dimensions.

Multiply the two dimensions to find area. Add all four sides to find perimeter, and check your units: square units for area, length units for perimeter.

How this skill works

Area = width × height. The result is in square units.

Perimeter = 2 × (width + height). The result is in length units.

Worked example

A rectangle is 7.5 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its area and perimeter.
  1. Area = 7.5 × 4 = 30 cm².
  2. Perimeter = 2 × (7.5 + 4) = 2 × 11.5 = 23 cm.

Answer: Area = 30 cm²; perimeter = 23 cm

Teaching notes

  • Do not use square units for a perimeter.

Answers and steps
  1. Area = 27 cm²; perimeter = 21 cm
    1. Area = 4.5 × 6 = 27 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (4.5 + 6) = 21 cm.
  2. Area = 90 cm²; perimeter = 39 cm
    1. Area = 7.5 × 12 = 90 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (7.5 + 12) = 39 cm.
  3. Area = 78.75 cm²; perimeter = 36 cm
    1. Area = 7.5 × 10.5 = 78.75 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (7.5 + 10.5) = 36 cm.
  4. Area = 8 cm²; perimeter = 12 cm
    1. Area = 2 × 4 = 8 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (2 + 4) = 12 cm.
  5. Area = 40 cm²; perimeter = 28 cm
    1. Area = 4 × 10 = 40 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (4 + 10) = 28 cm.
  6. Area = 55 cm²; perimeter = 32 cm
    1. Area = 5 × 11 = 55 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (5 + 11) = 32 cm.
  7. Area = 42.75 cm²; perimeter = 28 cm
    1. Area = 4.5 × 9.5 = 42.75 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (4.5 + 9.5) = 28 cm.
  8. Area = 36 cm²; perimeter = 26 cm
    1. Area = 4 × 9 = 36 cm².
    2. Perimeter = 2 × (4 + 9) = 26 cm.
